Description
In 2003 we focused most of our efforts on our research projects DEAL and CIM. Both projects made significant progress in close cooperation with our partners.
The second year of DEAL encompassed several research activities. Through meetings with the involved logistic companies we gained a better understanding of the domain and the resulting research questions. The Free university focused on modelling the internal processes of the logistical companies in order to be able to evaluate the changes that DEAL could introduce. The Erasmus university focused more on the supply chain management in the logistical sector. The national research institute for mathematics and computer science researched several auction mechanisms and strategies such as the ability to decommit. Almende conducted research on the agent engine of the system, especially machine learning and agent communication were important research topics. Almende also developed a demonstration of this agent platform, tailor made for the transportation domain. Current research is building a simulation to investigate learning mechanisms. We want to be able to provide agents with feedback so the agent can learn.
After the kick-off in may 2003, the focus in CIM was mainly on understanding the domain and the finetuning of relevant research areas. This included inventarisation of plans and evaluation of disasters, mainly conducted by the Free university, CMotions and Falck. The Technical university Delft focused on inter-agent planning and coordination mechanisms. Almende focused on coordination mechanisms related to the interface between Almendes agent based communication technology and that of the national research institute for mathematics and computer science: the Mobile Channel Architecture.
Almende performed other research mainly on general agent platform development and communication & community research. For the latter we investigated several communication and organisational networks in order to learn more about network characteristics and dynamics.
Almende put great effort in investigating new research areas and in developing new research ideas for research project. Almende generated more new innovative ideas and turned more of them into concrete proposals than ever before.
